Choosing Heaven's Highway

 

Going through the book of Matthew, I got stuck on the verse that says “enter ye at the strait gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction…” I paused, and couldn’t move further. I have heard this verse for many years but it really didn’t sound this strong. Many a time, we try to run from telling our friends or those we meet on the evangelism field about the way to heaven. We even refuse to tell ourselves about this, we hide under fact that Jesus is a merciful father. We tell people about the love of Jesus and that Jesus loves them regardless of their lifestyle, which is absolutely correct and accurate. However, we must not shy away from telling people that …wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction and many there be which go in thereat” - Matthew 7:13. 

Being a Christian and giving your life to Him doesn’t guarantee one will make heaven. The bible says in Matthew 7:14 that because strait is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life and few there be that find it. Note the word “Few”, why is it that out of all the Christians in this world only a small part will ever find the narrow gate. Let us try to explore that together.

What is a highway?

It is a way that leads directly to a particular destination.

The highway to heaven is narrow because it is only meant for one person at a time. You cant go through it with anyone else, you have to pass through it alone. And mind you, this highway is not tiled or tarred, it isn’t so easy and smooth. No one can go through the narrow way without the help of the Lord Jesus. Only those who can endure and persevere can survive this highway. The road to hell is so smooth and easy, no potholes, no rocks, no challenge. A lot of children of God prefer this route, they are born again but cannot endure a challenge. Once a problem surfaces, they take a u-turn to the broadway.

Do you know why the gate to destruction is wide? Because millions of people go in every minute, people want the easy way and don’t bother about the end, they don’t stop to think about the destination. They want it done like right now, they don’t want to face any difficulty, always looking for a sweet life.

Choosing heaven's highway means overlooking the luxuries of life and focusing on God alone. It means forsaking everything for God. It is a rough road because you need to love God to reach that destination, if you are pretending to love Jesus, you will get to a stage where you will get tired and turn back. 

This all goes back to the word of God in Luke 14: 26, which says “if any man comes to me, and hate not his father and mother and wife and children and children and brethren and sisters, yea and his own life also he cannot be my disciple”…Sounds straightforward and tough right? This simply means you have to love God than anything else, you need to be his disciple for you to progress on this highway. Heaven’s highway is not for babies or the weak-hearted, it is for those who have decided to lay down their lives for Jesus. It is for those who are ready to give anything up for God. On a narrow road, you get distractions because you notice everything that passes or crawls past your side. Of course, you will be scared because it looks like you are alone but when you have the understanding that God is with you, you definitely will reach your final destination.

Finally, when you choose the highway you choose to stand out. The bible says …few ever find that narrow way. Are you ready to make that decision? Are you ready to forsake that beautiful and wide highway to follow the narrow one? Think about it and take a stance now before it is too late.
