Can I Turn the Other Cheek? - Antidote to Revenge
"But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also" - Matthew 5:39
Reading through the Gospel of Matthew, trying to understand my father's ministry Jesus Christ while on earth. I just got stuck on Matthew 5:39, and the verse emphasized itself in my heart. If someone slaps you on the right cheek, turn and offer the left cheek.
Wow! I just could not get over it. I tried to imagine it. I can not even remember the last time someone slapped me, but I know a slap on a grown lady's cheek will be harrowing. The Bible says to turn to the other one instead. Hmmm, this scripture means a lot to us as believers, but we do not get it. We all know how painful it can be when being blamed for something we did not do or know anything about. We all know how annoying and hurtful it can be for someone to step on our toes, and all we can say is "the Lord bless you" instead of replying with a loud scream shouting at the person. It takes an extraordinary man or woman to turn the other cheek.
The Bible explains what true Christianity really means. I was in discussion with someone recently and was talking about being Christlike. No one is like Christ and the name Christian means we are like Christ. However, we are all working in progress towards the perfect man. This is what it means to be Christ-like, to have humility, patience, long-suffering, perseverance, and brokenness.
The world will tell you, "that is ridiculous," "stop being stupid," or "you are too dull"; Oh yes! They do not understand that this is what strengthens us as Christians because it means we are dead to flesh. Once a man is dead to the flesh, he starts to operate on another level. He is no longer operating in the natural realm but in the supernatural. It is not easy to turn the other cheek in our generation because we do not want to be seen as weak or as a fool. It takes conscious effort with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I know humanly speaking, I cannot turn the other cheek; I ask for your help. Help me, Lord, to submit my heart to you. Help me die to flesh so I can experience the great wonders you have for me.
"Be strong and courageous; don’t be terrified or afraid of them. For it is the Lord your God who goes with you; He will not leave you or forsake you.”
